Whiter Skin – A Dangerous Obsession

Skin whitening is not a new concept for us. In fact, we grew up in a society where fairness is associated with beauty. Products and treatments that promise a several-shade lighter skin is the craze among people of color across the world.

Companies often underrepresent colored people. When they finally do, it will be with undeserving circumstances. Making them huddle in the back while a fair skinned model takes the spotlight or be rejected by modeling and beauty companies.

Despite having a large portion of people with darker skin in the world, cosmetic businesses still only offer a few shades for these gorgeous beings to choose from and influence them into trying their whitening products instead. Why?

There is a common misconception that people with light skin is more attractive than people with dark-skin. And the industry surely took advantage of it. In fact, the Philippines has a thriving industry for fairness products. They created stigma and stereotypes that is ingrained into our very core which causes discrimination and racism.

But there is a lesser known fact about this multimillion dollar market. They can land you with far more serious problems than expected results.

  1. Discoloration – Hydroquinone is a known whitening agent which may cause incurable hyperpigmentation.
  2. Skin thinning – Some whitening products are strong enough to thin out your skin. It is portrayed by exposed veins/capillaries, bleached skin, and severe bruising.
  3. Skin irritations – Numerous bleaching agents have components that can block your pores that your skin finds as a nuisance. It causes aggravations like redness, skin peeling, rash, aridness, and inflammation.
  4. Reduced skin healing ability – Your body has the ability to heal itself. But with continued use of high-dose decolorizing crops, it loses that ability.
  5. Exacerbation of skin conditions – It is proven that people who have intensely sensitive skin suffer harshly in the hands of chemical-based whitening/bleaching products.
  6. Cancer – Many whitening creams contain compounds that have carcinogenic properties that increase the risk of health issues like skin cancer.
