Here’s the thing. More often than not, if we get to know our skin by heart, it becomes easier to create our own regimen to achieve that clear, glowing complexion and banish those pesky pimples that can be so annoying. However, no matter how amazing the products we use, acne can still form if we unknowingly do things that contribute to breakouts!
So, to give you an idea what habits can start the formation of acne, here are 10 reasons why you may be breaking out.
1. Overuse of spot treatments.
Sometimes, when we get an acne a couple of days before a special event, we tend to overuse on topical pimple treatments such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. This may dry out the skin and cause it to release more oil and blemishes. Instead of highly-chemicalized products, you may opt for our Emu Oil, which has essential contents that resemble that of the human skin; making it effective in treating conditions such as acne.
2. Use of comedogenic products.
You may not be aware of this but there are some skin care or makeup products in the market that contain ingredients, which may clog the pores. Some of these include mineral oil (mostly found in lotions) and silicones (often incorporated in makeups). So, make sure that the items you use are labeled noncomedogenic: products that have been formulated specifically not to clog the pores.
3. Hair product ingredients clogging pores.
You may be unknowingly using products that clog the pores, like your shampoo and conditioner. These can have agents that seep to the pores and clog them, resulting to acne on the chest, back and hairline. To avoid this, make sure you rinse away these products from your skin. You can also try our hair care products: Lichen + Coffee Shampoo and Conditioner and Voila Locks so you get softer, shinier skin without getting pesky acne!
4. Scrubbing the skin too hard.
I know, how irritating and frustrating it can be to have acne. But scrubbing way too harshly on your skin won’t really help because it can cause more damage than good. Instead, be gentle on the skin and use mild products that effectively clean the pores, like our Clear Y Rosy, Shades of Shave, Orange Water Toner and Emu Oil.
5. Not washing face and body after wearing makeup and working out.
It’s this easy: if you don’t wash your body/face and leave your skin with makeup, dirt, and oil to mix with your sweat, it’s so much easier for the bacteria to reside in your pores and cause breakouts. So, if you can’t shower right after going to the gym, at least wipe your face, chest and back with facial wipes to minimize the formation of new pimples. To effectively remove your makeup, you can use our Ultra Nourishing Tonics and be confident no trace of dirt will be left on your face.
6. Not wearing sunscreen.
The sun doesn’t help in clearing your skin of acne. If anything, it worsens the condition because it dries out the skin, which triggers the increase of oil production that leads to the formation of zits. So, if you have plans to stay under the sun for a long period of time, make sure you wear sunscreen to give your skin the protection it needs from the harmful effects of the sun; just like what Keep Safe Sunscreen can do.
7. Popping zits/Constantly touching skin.
Trust me, I know how tempting it is to pick at your skin at the sight of a blemish. But that won’t fix the problem, as this may only result in the formation of scars or spreading of the bacteria underneath the skin. This will be hard, but try not to touch your skin so as not to transfer bacteria and just let your pimples heal on their own.
8. Eating certain food that can trigger breakouts.
There are certain foods that can trigger pimple breakouts especially if someone is allergic to the foods’ components. So, if you have noticed that your skin reacts differently to a certain food, try cutting this from your diet or limiting consumption. Also, ensure that you always have a healthy meal every time you eat (I know this is hard but you have to try!).
9. Smoking cigarette.
Not only is smoking bad for your health, it is also one of the culprits of acne. This is because the carcinogens in cigarettes irritate the skin and dry it out, which triggers the skin to produce more oil that leads to breakouts. So, stop smoking!
10. Not releasing stress.
Too much stress can trigger the production of stress hormones that increase oil production, which leads to acne formation. And having acne can then result to even more stress. So, get out of this cycle by working out or meditating regularly. You can also try diffusing Bergamot, Ylang-Ylang, Frankincense, and Lemongrass Essential Oils to help ease your mind from worries.
I know these are a lot of things to avoid. But trust us, it’s worth it!
