A Hairstylist's Guide to Healthy Hair

If there’s someone who knows how to give us the proper tips and knowledge regarding hair care, it would most definitely be a hairstylist. These people have obtained the necessary education to know the basics, as well as the do’s and don’ts to make your tresses softer, shinier and longer.

To share with you some of these techniques, we have curated tips from celebrity hair professional Lourd Ramos on his recent interview with Preview.

Shampoo every day.

Contrary to popular belief that we should only shampoo our hair every other day, Lourd said that it is actually necessary for our locks to be cleaned with shampoo every single day. This is to get rid or fight free radicals that are everywhere, from sweat, pollution, and even the food we eat. For this, we recommend you try our well-loved Coffee + Lichen Shampoo, which penetrates each strand for protein absorption and protect the hair from free radicals and the harmful effects of UVB.

Don’t shower with hot water.

As much as hot water helps to relax after a long day, this is not advisable as it can burn the scalp - a part of your body that also needs a balanced pH level to keep healthy. Additionally, Lourd notes that hot showers can make the scalp allergic and sensitive, which may lead to hair fall. Instead, he recommends to go lukewarm then finish off with cool water.

Don’t soak your hair in conditioner longer than necessary.

Lourd says that soaking the hair in conditioner is not necessary unless it’s a leave-on product. He adds that there are two types of conditioners, one that is specifically for the hair and one for the scalp. For the former, lather the product from the shaft downwards and for the latter, start the application on the scalp. He points out that cool water to ensure the nutrients are not rinsed off. We recommend using our Lichen + Coffee Conditioner that is both for the scalp and hair, as it repairs damage, regulates moisture, and fights odor-causing bacteria.

Maintain overall wellness.

To keep your hair and scalp nourished, Lourd says we should nourish it from within. This means eating healthy food and exercising regularly. He suggests the intake of Vitamins C and E, which are both beneficial for the hair and scalp with their neutralizing properties.
